Project Overview
A major supermarket chain partnered with Packaged Organics in a project to transition surplus food from Biogas (BIO) processing to animal feed in a three-phase approach.
Leveraging Packaged Organics’ expertise in waste management and sustainability solutions, the initiative focused on creating a transparent compliance framework while achieving significant financial rebates and environmental benefits.
Solution
The project followed a structured Measure, Analyse, and Optimise approach:
Measure – Reviewed surplus volumes and collection frequencies through site visits, establishing processes, segregation, and compliance frameworks.
Analyse – Analysed site data to create short, medium, and long-term partnering plans, focusing on carbon reduction and compliance.
Optimise – Targeted 8 sites with a phased across 3 food types. Phase 1: Bread, Phase 2: Cakes & Confectionary, and Phase 3: Ambient foods.
Result
This project transformed how the supermarket managed surplus food, achieving tangible results in sustainability, compliance, and financial performance.
